Duncan Attwood of fit20 Exeter and Torquay demonstrates the difference between a pound of muscle and a pound of fat, showing how fit20 can can transform one’s body composition – see video below.

Duncan Attwood – early inspirations and the journey to fit20

Devon Business News: Can you share a bit about your journey and how you got involved with fit20?

Duncan Attwood:  Absolutely. My journey into fitness started when I was a child. I was overweight and had numerous health issues. Exercise wasn’t part of my life until I stumbled into whitewater kayaking, which led me to train with Olympic coaches. This experience transformed my physique and, more importantly, my health. Realising the profound impact exercise had on my life, I pursued a degree in sports science and a master’s degree, dedicating my career to helping others achieve their fitness goals. fit20 stood out to me because of its focus on efficient and effective strength training. It also has the ability to change the composition of one’s body as fat is replaced by muscle.

Duncan is a keen networker in Devon. Here he is sharing a 60 minute presentation at BNI Exeter City Wall.

The concept of fit20

Devon Business News: fit20’s training model is quite unique. Can you explain how it works?

Duncan Attwood: Certainly. At fit20, we focus on strength training with just one 20-minute session per week. This might sound surprising, but it’s highly effective. The principle is based on intense, slow and controlled movements that push your muscles to their limit, prompting your body to rebuild stronger. Our method ensures you gain strength without excessive strain or risk of injury, making it suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Devon Business News:  Can you lose weight by doing fit20’s strength training programme?

Duncan Attwood: This is one of the most-asked questions at fit20 in Exeter. Yes, you can, however that’s not as important as changing your body composition. (see the video below to understand the huge difference between a pound of fat in comparison to a pound of muscle or read Weighing up fit20 and weight loss).

Personal and professional growth

Devon Business News: Your journey with fit20 has been impressive, especially in Exeter. How has your personal experience shaped your professional approach?

Duncan Attwood: My personal transformation through exercise drives my passion for fit20. Having experienced firsthand the life-changing benefits of strength training, I’m committed to providing that same opportunity to others. My background in sports science and my experience in the fitness industry, including working with major gyms, have given me the knowledge and insight to understand what works and what doesn’t. This has been crucial in ensuring our members see real, sustainable results.

Success stories and impact

Devon Business News: You must have many success stories from your members. Can you share a few that stand out?

Duncan Attwood: There are so many, but a few come to mind. Sami, for example, suffered from severe back pain and was on medication and sleeping tablets. Within three months of training with us, she was off all medication and pain-free. Tom, an avid surfer, found he could catch waves faster and with more agility after joining fit20. Another member, Paul, was struggling to keep up with his cycling group despite training hard. After starting fit20, he noticed a significant improvement in his strength and endurance, allowing him to outpace his friends.

Duncan receives testimonials from fellow networking colleagues at BNI.

The new Torquay studio

Devon Business News: Tell us about the new fit20 studio in Torquay. What can members expect?

Duncan Attwood: Our new studio in Torquay is an exciting expansion for us. Members can expect the same high-quality, personalised training experience that we offer in Exeter. The studio is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and will be staffed by highly trained professionals. Our goal is to provide a welcoming, supportive environment where members can achieve their fitness goals efficiently and effectively.

Community and corporate engagement

Devon Business News: You mentioned you’ve had some success with businesses offering fit20 training to their staff as part of a benefits package. Can you elaborate on that?

Duncan Attwood: Yes, one notable example is Janet Sawyer from Little Pod. She was a member before the lockdown and experienced significant benefits from our training. Post-lockdown, she decided to provide memberships for her entire team, allowing them to train during work hours. This has improved her team’s overall health, reduced absenteeism, and increased productivity. It’s a fantastic model for other companies to consider.

Addressing common concerns

Devon Business News: Many people might be sceptical about the effectiveness of just 20 minutes of training per week. How do you address these concerns?

Duncan Attwood: It’s a common concern, but the results speak for themselves. Our method is based on solid scientific principles. We weaken the muscles in a controlled manner, prompting them to rebuild stronger. This process takes about a week, hence why training once a week is effective. Our members consistently see improvements in strength, endurance and overall health, which validates our approach. Expanding the fit20 network

Devon Business News: You’ve mentioned plans for further expansion. What’s next for fit20 in Devon?

Duncan Attwood: Our vision is to have multiple studios across Devon. After Torquay, we’re looking at areas in the Southwest. We aim to make fit20 accessible to more people, providing them with an efficient and effective way to improve their health and fitness.

Final thoughts

Devon Business News: Before we wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share?

Duncan Attwood: Just to reiterate how excited we are about the new Torquay studio. We believe in the power of strength training to transform lives, and we’re eager to bring that to more people. Whether you’re an athlete looking to enhance performance or someone wanting to improve overall health, fit20 offers a solution that fits into even the busiest lifestyle.
