Cornwall-founded e-commerce bookkeeping specialist company, Fox Clever Bookkeeping has expanded into Devon, offering local businesses an award-winning virtual accounts department service.

Fox Clever Bookkeeping, which has been recognised as the Best E-commerce Bookkeeping Company – South West, has established a presence in Devon with a new base in Torquay, strengthening its support for online retailers and ambitious businesses across the South West.

The business was founded by entrepreneur, Elly Flower in 2018 and has built its reputation by going beyond traditional bookkeeping, acting as a virtual accounts department for small businesses and limited company directors who want more than compliant accounts – they want clarity, strategy and a clear path to profit.

“Devon has a brilliant community of ambitious small business owners, and we’re excited to be part of it,” said Elly. “We’ve always worked remotely, so our clients across the South West already know us, this just makes it official.”

Speaking to Devon Business News, Elly explained why specialist knowledge is becoming increasingly important. “E-commerce shouldn’t really be niche because it’s absolutely huge and it’s everywhere, but within the accounting world it still is. There aren’t many accountants or bookkeepers who have the specialist knowledge to deal with it.”

The firm supports businesses processing anything from around 50 online orders each month to thousands of transactions, using specialist software alongside AI-powered systems to automate complex bookkeeping processes.

For Elly, bookkeeping is about much more than balancing the books. “I’m a great believer in understanding your profits. I do quite a lot of profit analysis for my customers so they can really understand what their business needs in order to attract investment and achieve growth.”

Rather than replacing accountants, Fox Clever Bookkeeping works alongside accountancy firms, providing specialist support when businesses generate large volumes of online sales and financial data. “What normally happens is the accountant lifts the bonnet and says, ‘There’s a lot of data here. You’re going to need a specialist bookkeeper.’ That’s when I get the phone call.”

Before launching Fox Clever Bookkeeping, Elly helped establish Cornwall’s first games development studio, giving her first-hand experience of the challenges faced by growing businesses. That entrepreneurial background continues to influence the way she supports clients today.

“Nobody teaches business owners what profit actually means,” she remarks. “There’s gross profit, net profit, profit before tax and profit after tax, and nobody really holds your hand through any of that when you’re growing a business.”
