Devon-based haulier, Wains Transport, has made significant strides in fuel efficiency with the addition of the new Mercedes-Benz Actros L tractor unit to its fleet. This move marks another milestone in the company’s journey as a local success story, showcasing its commitment to innovation and excellence in the transportation industry.
Wains Transport: a Devon success story
Operating out of Kingsford Rural Business Centre near Cullompton, Wains Transport has become a cornerstone of the local economy, specialising in bulk tipper, low-loader work, and general haulage. The company’s strategic location, just minutes from the M5, allows it to serve clients across the UK effectively. Now in its third generation of family ownership, Wains Transport has built a reputation for reliability and customer satisfaction.

Enhanced fuel efficiency with Mercedes-Benz Actros L
Wains Transport’s latest addition, the Mercedes-Benz Actros L 2553, has already proven its worth. The new tractor unit, delivered by Dealer City West Commercials, provides a powerful 390 kW (530 hp) 12.8-litre in-line six-cylinder engine and a spacious flat-floored GigaSpace cab.
According to Managing Director Aaron Wain, the Actros L outperforms other vehicles in their 25-strong fleet in terms of fuel efficiency. “We don’t measure mpg obsessively because there’s a lot of variation in the work our trucks do, but the Actros L is consistently better than any other tractor in our line-up by a noticeable margin,” he said.
This focus on efficiency aligns with the company’s broader goal of reducing operational costs while maintaining high service standards.
Driver comfort and advanced features
Driver satisfaction is a key priority for Wains Transport, and the Actros L delivers on this front as well. The vehicle’s advanced features include sophisticated aerodynamics, quieter cabs with improved heat insulation, and a lower, more comfortable seating position that enhances visibility. Safety is also paramount, with the Actros L equipped with Active Brake Assist 5, Attention Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, and Proximity Control Assist systems.
“Our drivers are typically out on the road all week, so it’s only fair we try to make them as comfortable as possible. The Actros L is as close as you can get to a home-from-home and is well liked by our driver Chris Bolt,” Aaron added.
Unique branding and artistic flair
One of the distinctive features of Wains Transport’s fleet is the airbrush artwork on the back wall of their trucks. “We choose a wide variety of themes, often related to favourite movies or to boats,” says Aaron.
Previous subjects have included everything from Sir Francis Drake’s ‘Golden Hind’ galleon to Spiderman. This time, the company chose to honour Sir Winston Churchill. “We wanted to pay tribute to the indomitable bulldog spirit of Sir Winston Churchill, so we opted for a portrait featuring his famous ‘V for Victory’ salute.
Additionally, each vehicle in the Wain Transport fleet is named after female family members, with the latest Actros L christened Harper Joy after Aaron’s niece. This personal touch reflects the company’s family-oriented values and its deep roots in the Devon community.
A commitment to excellence
Wains Transport’s investment in the Mercedes-Benz Actros L is a testament to its ongoing commitment to excellence and innovation. With its state-of-the-art workshop equipped with diagnostic tools and a brake roller tester, the company ensures that its fleet remains in peak condition, ready to meet the demands of its clients.
By focusing on fuel efficiency, driver comfort, and unique branding, Wains Transport continues to solidify its reputation as a leader in the Devon transportation industry.
